Butterfly and Marigolds
Inspiration drawn from a 16th century painting by Jacques LeMoyne

The first time I embroidered this design was for my niece's wedding in 2001. I mounted it in the cover of a 'Memory Box', reminiscent of the embroidered boxes of the Medieval period in England.

Meredith and I had an ongoing conversation in small gifts always including the motif of a butterfly, symbol of a free spirit.

Transforming a design from one medium to another is a continuous theme in my work. I loved the simplicity of the original painting and its magnificent colours. The challenge was to capture that same clarity with silk thread.
