Pipers silks on écru linen ground

These butterfly forms were inspired by the magnificent embroideries of the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute, China. The original piece, entitled 'One Hundred Butterflies' was executed in 1989 by Ren Huijuan, Shi Yi and Zhu Huifen of the SERI. A study of their work, through a catalogue published in 1999 by the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, became a sort of visual 'master class' for me as I worked alone in my studio. The question I continued to ask myself was: 'Can I do this?'
